Students at Brennan Middle School were taught how to properly fold the American flag by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 115 on Monday, April 22.
Hannah Clark’s Alternative Learning Program, which includes students in grades 6, 7 and 8, discussed the importance of a proper flag fold and practiced their skills, eventually working up to folding a flag so large that it required six helpers!
VFW members taught students about the materials used for different types of flags, and students learned how to give the American flag a proper salute. Students also learned that a flag is “in distress” when it gets stained, frayed or worn and how to properly put a distressed flag to rest.
Students practiced the Pledge of Allegiance and received commemorative coins, designating them as “Junior VFW Members.”
Special thanks to VFW Post 115 members Jerry Lynch, Joe Parent, Richard Oliver, Joe Murphy, Richard Fredette and John Moore!
